Being in the great outdoors can be an exhilarating experience. Especially if you have planned your own route and have confidence in your map reading skills. With these tools you are free to explore some the most spectacular places that the UK has to offer. Safe in the Knowledge that you know exactly where your are . 


Our Navigation training courses run 365 days of the year. Which are perfect for anyone who wants to be self sufficient in the UK mountains . We offer 1 and 2 day training as well the option for a
night nav training .

1 Day introduction Navigation Training  for beginners 

you will learn the skills to walk safely and confidently in the UK mountains.

Having the ability to navigate in the mountains is a great skill to have & much easier than you think! If the thought of being stuck in the mist or even getting lost is restricting your adventures,  sounds like our 1 day navigation training course will be ideal for you . 

Our course is run using many areas and in all weathers, We restrict the group size to 5 people to ensure that everyone is getting an appropriate amount of attention from the instructor . This is a very  hands on course and the majority of the day is spent out on the fells.


Course Outline

The 1 day navigation training course will normally start at a pre agreed venue where we meet , run through the outline of the day and talk about  some of the basics. From there its out on the ground , The vast majority of the day will be spent  learning the skills at a slow and practical pace. The course generally last about 7 hours with a small lunch break in between.


During the course you can expect to cover: 

•Map orientation
•4 and 6 figure grid references
•Types of maps and map scales
•Learn how to use a compass effectively
•Pacing, timings and taking a bearing


Who is its suitable for ? 

This course is a great "zero - mountaineer" course. If you've not done any mountain navigation before, but are wanting to get out and explore confidently .

Whats included ?

The course fee includes full instruction from a qualified and experienced Mountain leader. We can also provide maps and compasses if you need one. Alternatively anyone booked on to one of our courses receives 10% off at Cotswolds outdoors - Grassmere
