"beat the crowds with the silver NNAS award "

The Silver National Navigation award scheme is the next step after completing the Bronze award. It adds new skills required to navigate to places some distance away from the path / track. The award teaches you accurate map and compass work as well as new techniques suitable for navigating across open country side

The two day silver NNAS award builds on from what you have learnt from your  bronze award. This course offers the opportunity to become proficient in the use of maps and compass, thinking about and implementing the use of strategies while walking away from the beat track.

Through out the course  your NNAS tutor will work closely with you to develop and increase your understanding of navigation and how to stay safe in the UK mountains . Our course are held in either the Lake District or Yorkshire dales with a key emphasis on quality learning rather than cover massive distances. At the end of day day two there is a short assessment.

The syllabus for the silver awards is :

  • - Use a compass to follow accurate bearings and to   check the direction
  • - Plan a  strategy for a days walking on moorland and   think about how you would break each stage down.
  • - Understand and apply components of a navigational   strategy
  • - Demonstrate an understanding of contour  features,     both large  and small.
  • - Demonstrate an understanding of factors affecting     route choice.
  • - Judge distance accurately on the map and on the     ground.
  •  - Employ simple relocation strategies.
  • - Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of fatigue and   physical discomfort  brought on by navigating in   demanding countryside and/or extreme weather   conditions.
