LEARNING TO CLIMB WITH A DISABILITY
By Sam Baynes
In the new year of 2016, Sam suffered a horrific accident whilst out skiing in the Alps. Since her recovery, she’s been on a mission to prove to everyone that it doesn’t have to stop you. Sam is well on her way to climbing and walking her way across the country and further afield with aspirations to climb Mount Everest. Sam’s Journey up to now has been incredible and one that I’m excited to share with you. Here are her thoughts on learning to climb.
Jack – Mountain Adventure
It’s important to remember that having a disability doesn’t dictate your ability. There is always away. there is always an adaptation that can be made. A way to do things differently.
Learning to climb with a disability is just have to think outside the box and remember that you don’t have to do everything to the “norm”.
“It’s okay not to be okay”
I used to be and can still have moments of feeling worried about what other people would think of me. So worried that I wouldn’t even have a go and see if I could do something because I knew it wouldn’t be in the conventional “normal” way.
Then I got over that. I stepped out of my comfort zone and I have never looked back. Yes, there are times where I want to give up. I think what the point is. Why am I even trying? I am going to fail but what I got to learn is that it is only through failure we learn.
We learn how to progress. How to succeed and get the result we want. Now I just happen to like that process of learning and developing and becoming someone, I never thought I could be.
Having the right tools and being surrounded by the people who will support and develop you and you trust to push you in the right direction is important.
Climbing with Jack from Mountain Adventure Lake District was exactly this. He got me to understand the route. He made me feel safe and explained everything i needed to know. As well as coming up with adaptations together and didn’t make me feel stupid.
