Rock climbing taster session in the Lake District.
The great thing about Mountain Adventure Lake District’s rock climbing taster session. Is that we can literally make it work for any level of ability. This was the case with Robin and Nash who joined us all the way from South Africa. They had wanted to come on a learn to lead course however because of the limited time they opted to do a Rock climbing session with a twist.
Our aim of the morning was to focus on what they already knew and help them to improve on. Because of this looked at making was already good, amazing! So the day started off with a quick warm up on the classic beginner’s crag Lower Scout. Due to the nature of the crag, its doesn’t lend its self very well to learning to lead but does make up for this by having a small mix of good routes perfect for introductions.
Both Robin and Nash had done there fair share of indoor bouldering but had actually never climbed on a wall or outside so this was good places to start. We look at staying safe on the crag as well as interpreting the guide book. From there it was time to look at the hard skills of climbing such as tieing to the rope and belaying efficiently not stupidity. We also cleared up the often confusing difference between “top roping” and “bottom roping” and painted that pictures by doing. To wrap the morning up spent time discussing movement, Balances and coordination and playing a few games that will them to carry on developing that as they move forward with climbing. Both Nash and Robin walked away with a huge improvement on what they already know.
WOW, all that in just 4 hours !!! Our climbing sessions don’t have to be as intense as this. It could be that you’re looking to just try the sport as something fun to with your family or friends. Or you genuinely just want to come to give it a try.
